Guardianships

If an adult no longer has the capacity to make decisions regarding his or her own property, or his/her own medical care, a court may appoint a guardian. If the now disabled adult had drafted Advanced Medical Directives for those health care decisions, and Powers of Attorney for handling his/her money and property, prior to the time he/she became disabled, there might be an alternative to a guardianship proceeding in the court. If not, the only remaining choice may be to petition the court to appoint a guardian.

Should the time arrive when a member of your family, or someone close to you is unable to take care of matters relating to his/her property, or unable to take care of him or herself, you can petition the court to appoint a guardian and make sure that your significant other and his/her property is taken care of in a competent fashion.

If you live in Baltimore City, or the following Maryland counties: Anne Arundel; Baltimore; Carroll; Harford; or Howard, and need assistance filing a petition for guardianship, a Levian Legal Attorney can assist you.
